Middle school students have the ability to expand upon the musical experiences they were given in elementary school. Students may enroll in a general music class where they learn elements of music theory, history, and musical theater, in addition to receiving guitar instruction. They may also choose to take part in one or both of the sixth grade performing ensembles, band and chorus. These ensembles meet as a class during a full period of the school day and perform in evening concerts during the school year. Band students are pulled out of class to receive group lessons on their individual instrument, but these lessons are staggered over different days and periods so the same subject of classroom instruction is not missed each lesson.
Students may continue band and chorus into seventh and eighth grade where they are given additional opportunities to perform. Some choral examples include community caroling events, singing the National Anthem at Memorial Day programs, field trips to Hersheypark and the Iron Pigs, and performing for the fifth grade chorus at the elementary center. Additionally, six to nine members of the eighth grade chorus are nominated each year to participate in PMEA District 10 Intermediate Songfest.
Band students may be chosen to attend the PMEA Elementary 5th/6th grade BandFest or the PMEA Intermediate BandFest. They have performed for middle school pep rallies, special events and assemblies, and also played alongside the high school marching band during football games. There are often field trips for adjudication or competition which allow students to receive feedback from other music professionals in the state. Students may also choose to be involved in jazz band which is an extra-curricular ensemble that meets after school. In all ensembles, students learn the value of responsibility, teamwork, and discipline as they create music together.
